The Commitment Test: Do Whatever It Takes to Win Without Losing Yourself

In the high-stakes world of sales, we often hear the phrase, "Do whatever it takes to win." It’s a mantra that sounds powerful, driven, and ambitious. It’s the kind of language that gets people fired up in sales meetings and plastered on motivational posters.

But let’s pause for a moment and look at the hidden danger in that phrase.

When we say "do whatever it takes," we are often implicitly giving ourselves permission to compromise our values, cut corners, or abandon our integrity in the pursuit of a quota. We start to believe that the end justifies the means. We tell ourselves that as long as the contract is signed, the "how" doesn't really matter.

This is the trap. And it is a trap that leads to burnout, cynicism, and a hollow sense of achievement.

The Commitment Test

True commitment isn't about doing anything to win. True commitment is about doing the right things to win, consistently and with integrity. It is about having the discipline to stay true to your principles even when the pressure is at its highest.

I call this the "Commitment Test."

When you are faced with a difficult sales situation—a demanding client, a looming deadline, or a competitor playing dirty—ask yourself these three questions:

  1. Does this action align with my core values? If you have to compromise who you are to get the deal, the cost is too high.
  2. Would I be proud to explain this decision to my family or my mentors? If the answer is no, you are already on the wrong path.
  3. Am I building a relationship, or just closing a transaction? Transactions are fleeting; relationships are the foundation of a sustainable career.

Winning Without Losing Yourself

Winning is important. We are in sales, after all. But winning at the expense of your character is a pyrrhic victory. When you lose yourself in the process, you lose the very thing that makes you effective in the long run: your authenticity.

People buy from people they trust. They buy from people who are real, relatable, and relevant. When you start playing games or wearing a mask to "do whatever it takes," you erode that trust. You become just another salesperson in a sea of sameness.

So, the next time you feel the pressure to "do whatever it takes," remember the Commitment Test. Commit to excellence, commit to preparation, and commit to serving your clients with sincerity. But never, ever commit to losing yourself.

Because at the end of the day, the only person you have to live with is yourself. Make sure you like who you see in the mirror.
