Look At Your Top 3 Clients... Are You Building An Empire, Or Just Babysitting?
Building an Empire or Just Babysitting Your Top Clients?
Are you building an empire, or are you just babysitting your top clients?
It’s a question that hits hard, but it’s one that every sales professional and leader needs to answer with brutal honesty. In the world of sales, there is a massive difference between being a strategic partner who is actively growing an account and being a glorified babysitter who is simply waiting for the next fire to put out.
The Babysitting Trap
Babysitting is reactive. It’s transactional. It’s the act of showing up only when there’s a problem, checking in just to "stay on the radar," or performing tasks that keep the client happy in the short term but do nothing to deepen the relationship or expand your footprint. When you are babysitting, you are essentially holding space. You aren't driving value; you’re just preventing churn.
If your primary interaction with your top clients is "checking in to see if you need anything," you are babysitting. If you are only present when a contract is up for renewal, you are babysitting. If you don't know the strategic goals of your client’s business, you are babysitting.
Building an Empire
Building an empire, on the other hand, is proactive, intentional, and deeply relational. It’s about moving from being a vendor to being a trusted advisor. It’s about understanding the heartbeat of your client’s business so well that you can anticipate their needs before they even articulate them.
Empire builders don't just manage accounts; they cultivate partnerships. They are constantly looking for ways to bring value, challenge the status quo, and align their solutions with the client’s long-term vision. They are not afraid to have the tough conversations, and they are always looking for ways to help their clients win.
How to Shift Your Mindset
If you realize you’ve fallen into the babysitting trap, don't panic. It’s a common place to be, but it’s not where you have to stay. Here is how to start building your empire:
- Stop Checking In, Start Checking Up: Instead of asking "Is everything okay?", ask "How are you tracking against your goals for this quarter?" or "What is the biggest challenge you’re facing right now?"
- Deepen Your Discovery: You should know more about your client’s business than they expect you to. Research their industry, understand their competitors, and learn what keeps them up at night.
- Bring Proactive Value: Don't wait for a request. Bring ideas, insights, and connections to the table. Show them that you are invested in their success, not just your commission.
- Be Human: At the end of the day, people buy from people. Build a relationship that goes beyond the business transaction. Authenticity is the foundation of trust, and trust is the currency of an empire.
The Bottom Line
Babysitting might keep the lights on, but it won't build a legacy. If you want to grow, if you want to be indispensable, and if you want to build an empire, you have to stop playing it safe. You have to lean in, get uncomfortable, and start selling from the heart.
